There were two versions of the egg beater — both manual:

A handle attached to a kind of wide “spring,” which, when moved up and down quickly and intensely (a kind of bouncing motion), was used by housewives to whip the eggs.

The second type was a more “advanced” or “automatic” egg beater, as it was called back then. You just placed the two beaters into the bowl and turned the handle — the work was much easier and faster.
