Seperator

A device for separating milk into skim and cream: it was used to separate the fatty part of the milk from the skim milk.

Turning the handle created centrifugal force, which separated the fat droplets.
There were two tubes: one for the skim milk and one for the cream — the cream was used at home to make, among other things, butter.

In Moshav Herut, there was a central milk separator for the dairy farmers.
The only ones who sometimes had their own separators were the cow owners, as it was an expensive device considered a luxury.

In the pioneers’ hut at the “Lord’s House” Museum in Tel Mond, the separator is indeed displayed inside the hut, but it’s important to remember that it was rare for a family to own one.
Since most people went to the central separator in the moshav, it was also the place to catch up on all the local gossip while waiting in line.

For example: why the oil lamp in Bluma’s hut stayed lit until late at night…
