In the past, nighttime toilet needs were taken care of using a chamber pot, to avoid going outside due to security risks and wild animals such as wolves, jackals, and foxes.
The contents of the pot were emptied only in the morning into a soak pit located near the house.
Families who were well-off or had more resources had an outhouse outside the home.
Asa Bartov from Moshav Herut:
When he was 4–5 years old, they would sometimes even sit outside on the pot.
They would wipe the bottom… with newspaper, cut into rectangles.
When he traveled to the big city to visit his aunt in the Mahlul neighborhood of Tel Aviv (today the Hilton Hotel), he recalled that there were proper toilets built inside the house!
Despite that… he still found it difficult and preferred the pot.
