Terror Attacks in the Tel Mond Bloc: 1960–2003

Explosion in Kfar Hess – 1965

Due to its proximity to the border and the armistice line before the Six-Day War, Kfar Hess was targeted in an attack on March 1, 1965 (Sunday, 26 Adar 5725).

Infiltrators, apparently from Jordan, detonated explosives at 2:00 a.m., blowing up the village’s grain silo tower and damaging a residential home. The first explosion occurred about five minutes before a second one at the home of Mr. Ze’ev Tzfoni in the village center.

The family was asleep at the time, and miraculously no one was harmed. Damage was done to the kitchen and bathroom, and windows were shattered. Glass fell on Mr. Tzfoni’s ten-year-old son, but fortunately he was not injured.

A one-square-meter hole was blown in the silo tower. Approximately 30 minutes before the explosion, Mrs. Tzfoni had left her house but noticed nothing suspicious. Likewise, the village night watchman saw nothing unusual.

Immediately after the explosion, residents rushed to the village center. The estimated amount of explosive placed near the silo and Mr. Tzfoni’s house was tens of kilograms.

Investigation revealed that additional explosives were placed near a corner of the house but failed to detonate due to a technical malfunction. IDF and Border Police forces were quickly called to the scene, and an on-site investigation was launched.

The identity of the bombers remained unknown, but footprints of three individuals wearing rubber shoes led eastward from the village. In the morning, trackers attempted to follow their escape route.

Security officials suspected the perpetrators belonged to the Fatah terrorist organization and had entered from Jordan. This was notably the first sabotage attempt on villages and civilian homes since Operation Kadesh (the 1956 Sinai Campaign).

Kfar Hess made headlines that day with news of infiltrators blowing up the grain silo and a home, on the night of Sunday, 26 Adar Alef, 5725.

Murder in Kfar Yavetz – 1992

One of the most honorable sons of the bloc, a hardworking and upright man, a longtime member of Kfar Yavetz, Bachar Hajaj was brutally murdered by two despicable killers.

On the morning of Wednesday, 19 August 1992 (Av 19, 5752), Bachar Hajaj was murdered in his tomato field in the most brutal way by two Arab workers he had employed in his greenhouse.

Murder of Kfar Hess Security Officer – 2001

On the evening of Sunday, November 11, 2001, Aharon (Ahar’le) Usishkin, the security officer of Kfar Hess, was murdered while investigating a security alert about a suspicious individual entering the moshav.

At 19:25, Erez Matskin, a resident of Kfar Hess, reached the moshav entrance and encountered a suspicious-looking man. Erez approached him and asked, “What are you looking for?” The Arab man replied that he wanted to get to Tira.

Erez continued driving inside the village and met Yaakov Dvir and his son Avi, to whom he described the suspect. They then called Ahar’le, the security officer.

Ahar’le arrived quickly. Yaakov got into his car, and Avi got onto a four-wheeler. Together, they began searching for the suspect.

After about 15 minutes of searching, Yaakov got out of Ahar’le’s vehicle and began walking away. Suddenly, the terrorist appeared, approached the vehicle, and fired into it. Avi and Yaakov shouted at the attacker, who turned and began shooting at them. Avi Dvir was shot and evacuated to Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba.

Numerous security forces were called to the scene and remained throughout the night.
